Summer Missions [at Home]: Your Story Matters

Summer Missions at Home - Your Story Matters

One sweet summer, six years ago, I found myself sitting in a small village church home in the Philippines. I can't remember the name of the town but I do remember that it was raining that as we walked from home to home yelling for the children to come to church. I remember the songs we sang-some in English and some in Tagalog. I remember the crowded, brightly colored Jeepney that carried us from our temporary home at a school and orphanage to the small village. The Open Door Church, school, and orphanage buildings were all intertwined surrounded a basketball court and the church sanctuary was on the fourth floor above the classrooms and children's dormitories. Each Sunday morning we would join the service, which was in Tagalog. We would often teach the children, which could be a challenge since we spoke different languages. It was after this church service and lunch that we would head out to the village to attend a small house church. I was always filled with excitement on these … [Read more...]

Mario Kart Date Night

mario kart date night

The past few weeks have been super busy for Brian and I. Last weekend we traveled to Louisville to meet my newborn nephew, Weston. On Saturday we drove down to Kentucky Lake with Brian's parents for the day. Summer travels are so much fun but we are wore out! So we opted for a cozy, simple date night at home this week. Not wanting to just turn on a movie and zone out we decided to have a little Mario Kart competition. I decided to get creative and the Mario Kart Date Night was created! We had yummy Toad Upside Down Stuffed Peppers, and Mario Cornbread Blocks, and a Raceway Cheesecake for dinner and then moved on to a few rounds of Mario Kart! I'm not really sure who won....but I think it was me! The Food We had Toad Upside Down Stuffed Peppers, Mario Cornbread Blocks, and No-Bake Cheesecake with a oreo and m&m track. Finding Your Missionary Call [At Home]

Missionary Call at Home

I can distinctly remember being called to be a missionary twice in my life. The first time was at summer camp when I was 14. The pastor explained to us that as Christians we were called to give our lives to missions work and furthering God’s kingdom. I remember thinking, ‘Ok God. I’ll do whatever you need me to do.’ But I don’t think I meant it. I thought to myself, ‘I guess this means I’ll be teaching Sunday School for the rest of my life,’ and I’m pretty sure that God laughed! The second time I felt called to missions was when I was 23 and I had just returned home from a mission trip to the Philippines. This time I surrendered my whole life to God and committed to a life of missions overseas. I would go wherever God sent me and do whatever God wanted me to do. And I meant it with every ounce of my being. So imagine my surprise when I ended up in small subdivision in a comfy little house in Kentucky. I was prepared to go literally anywhere-I even went to seminary to … [Read more...]

Cultivating Emotional Intimacy

Emotional Intimacy

Emotional intimacy is something that we don’t think about much as long as we have it. But as soon as you and your spouse start to feel disconnected everything else begins to feel strained as well. Today I want to talk a little bit about what emotional intimacy is and how you can cultivate it in your marriage. Emotional Intimacy is the bond that is shared between a husband and wife. It is connecting on a deeper level. Whenever you first meet and decide to marry someone you have a connection with them. As you date, marry, and build a life together the connection grows. This connection is emotional intimacy. Let’s say that you come home from work and see your husband has had a rough day. With very few words you can read his mood and you know how to comfort him. In fact, your very presence is a comfort to him because he knows that you understand, comfort, and support him. This is emotional intimacy. It is my hope that you and your spouse always feel deeply connected but as we … [Read more...]

Does Vacation Bible School Matter?

vbs matter

When I was little it was never a question of if we would be going to Vacation Bible School or not because I knew that we would be going. It was as much a part of our summer as was chasing lightning bugs in the yard while the sun set. It was just how it was. I can’t recall missing a single Vacation Bible School as a child and I’m pretty sure I would have thrown a fit if I had to miss it. So for me, the answer is yes. Vacation Bible School matters very, very much. But does it matter for you? Churches put a huge amount of time, energy, and money into Vacation Bible School. There is food, music, crazy decorations, fun programs, and curriculum. It is A LOT of work. Is it really worth all the extra trouble? Because if it doesn’t matter then many, many people are wasting their time. So let me prove to you that they aren’t.   Why Vacation Bible School Matters for You As an adult, volunteering during Vacation Bible School is a HUGE sacrifice. By working at Bible School … [Read more...]

Simple and Easy Chicken Parmesan

chicken parmesan

One of the really fun things about growing up with sisters was when my mom, my sisters, and I would gather in the kitchen and cook together. When we were little we saw this as a chore and didn’t always want to participate, but now it seems like a treat. Cooking big family meals together has become a tradition. When we gather together on holidays it’s never a question of who will cook, because I know that we all will. The food that we prepare is often more traditional in nature. My mom can make homemade biscuits just like my Granny. We stick to Homestyle foods that can be prepared simply with the best and freshest ingredients. Another simple meal that we love to make (and eat!) together is Spaghetti.  Since we like Homestyle meals we stick with Ragu's Traditional Sauce. Ragu Homestyle Thick and Hearty Traditional Sauce is made with a combination of bold flavors such as basil, fennel, oregano, and black pepper but not yucky artificial flavors. Ragu’s Homestyle Sauce is the … [Read more...]
