The text came in the middle of the night and it was the first thing I read in the morning. My best friend was at the hospital about to have a baby. I was ecstatic! We had been anticipating this little girl’s birth for months and she was finally coming! Then reality sank in. I wasn’t going to the hospital to see this new little bundle of joy. In fact, it would be weeks before I got to meet her. And that made me so sad because I have been friends with this girl since 9th grade and I wanted to be there to meet her daughter. But I live 300 miles away from home and so I miss out on a lot of little moments like this one.
You see, Brian is from Kentucky and I’m Ohio and we just can’t be in two places at once. I am absolutely in love with my new hometown but I will always long for curvy little back roads and a small, small town where I know everyone’s name.
I don’t let myself get homesick very often because I feel like there is no use getting upset over something I can’t change, but days like this bring the longing to the forefront of my mind and I just can’t shake the urge to jump in the car and start driving. On these days I find comfort in know that I am exactly where God placed me and by wrapping myself up in my husband’s arms. I plan my next trip home and continue on with my daily tasks.
When God created the world, He didn’t mean for us to be alone. We have a desire to be with our families and a longing for our home when we are away. We like the familiar no matter how much the adventure appeals to us. In many places throughout the Bible we see God calling people to drop everything and follow him and when I feel homesick these are the stories that I turn to. What an amazing comfort to know that God doesn’t only go with us, but wants to give us comfort. ‘God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble’ (Psalm 46:1). If you are like me, and you find yourself 300 miles from home then I invite you to meet the one who can give you comfort and never leave your side. His name is Jesus and he wants to comfort you when you are homesick.
