One great way to make the most of the time that you have with your husband this season is to plan a trip and getaway! I am so happy to have Leslie on the blog today sharing about her holiday getaway to the Biltmore Estate!
I cannot believe Thanksgiving is TOMORROW! This time of year is just so magical and I love it. So much time to spend with family and just soak up all the goodness in life.
The one problem with this season, though, is how quickly it seems to go by! One minute we’re decorating for Christmas and the next thing you know, it’s January 1st and we’re taking it all down. I try very hard to live in every moment all season long so I can soak in enough to make it to next year! This also goes with spending time with my husband, Christian.
It’s easy to get sucked into the day to day of life and we try to have some special nights throughout the year, but especially at Christmas. The year we got engaged we started a tradition that I never want to end!
Small back story: we live in Charlotte, North Carolina which is about 2 hours from The Biltmore House in Asheville, NC. The Biltmore House was built by George Vanderbilt from 1889-1895 and is the largest privately-owned home in the United States. They go ALL OUT for Christmas starting November 1st. I have never seen anything like it before.
Okay, back to our tradition: each year, we take a day off work to spend at the Biltmore. We start the day by walking around a few of the gifts shops and picking out a new Christmas ornament. Typically, we also grab some coffee or hot chocolate around this time to keep warm.
Once we’ve caffeinated and shopped some, we either hit up the winery and free wine tasting or tour the house. I love the wine tasting because I’m not a huge wine drinker – so I can just have a few sips and move right along! Usually, we grab a bottle of their Christmas wine for Christmas Eve.
The house tour is the main reason for coming, of course. You’re not allowed to take pictures inside the house, but we took the backstage/rooftop tour last year so I was able to snag these:
After the house tour, which is typically an hour or so, we get dinner. We have a favorite restaurant that does a Southern Christmas buffet and it is amazing. Trout, prime rib, turkey, all your favorite Southern sides, cheese and antipasto, and so many delicious desserts. Once we’ve stuffed ourselves as much as we can, we load back up in the car and head home.
Now, I know not everyone lives near the Biltmore (but if you do, get your butt there this Christmas season!), but taking time like this to be with your special someone is SO important. I look forward to this day all year because we’re able to just mosey around all day spending time with each other. We usually use this time to talk about our futures, Christmas shop, and soak in why we love each other so much.
Find something near your home that lets you and your significant other escape for a little while, too. Whether it’s a Christmas festival, garden of lights, a Christmas orchestra or so many other lovely Christmas events, there’s something that will work for you guys! The holidays can be so crazy – don’t let the important people in your life get lost in the shuffle!
