I still remember it like it was yesterday. My hands were shaking, my mind was racing, and everyone was staring as my husband and I said our marriage vows. It was a wonderful day. While I have to admit that I still don’t feel like I know how to be a wife, I have learned a few things in my first year of marriage. I’ve learned that marriage is beautiful, and that my husband is a blessing. I’ve learned that marriage is hard and that’s ok. But most of all, I’ve learned that God must be in the center of our marriage and that is why I’m praying these four powerful prayers for my husband daily.
A husband’s job is not easy. On the day we said our marriage vows he became not only responsible for my well-being as well as his own. He is my leader, both in spiritual matters and in our home. He is my provider and I am thankful every day for the roof that he has placed over our heads. He is my protector. While I don’t plan for any harm to come our way, I know that he would protect me if it did. He is my supporter. He listens to my concerns and gives me to courage to pursue my dreams.
His job is not easy. That is not to say that the job of a wife is easy, because it isn’t either, but his job is different than mine. I love my husband, and so I must pray powerful prayers for him.
Pray for Him as A Leader
As my husband he is the spiritual leader of our household. You’ve probably read Ephesians 5:25. The Bible commands husbands to love their wives as their own bodies. I pray that he would stay close to Jesus so that he would also lead me to Jesus. As he faces each new decision we must make I pray that he would seek God’s will first. Spiritual warfare is real and the enemy seeks to destroy Christian marriages. We are battling that with prayer.
Pray for Him as a Provider
I pray for him as my provider. It’s because of my husband that we have our very own home to live in, health insurance, and a warm home. Now, I know that I can manage things on my own, but I couldn’t have these things without him because we are a team in our decisions and finances. He makes sure I have what I need. I pray Psalm 28:7 over him, “The Lord is my strength and my shield, my heart trusts in him and he helps me.” I pray that he would give his trust to God and that God would provide for his needs so that in turn he can provide for mine.
Pray for Him as a Protector
I pray for my husband because he is my protector. He has to protect me both physically and mentally. We live in a very safe little town, but I know that if something goes wrong he will be there for me. He tries to keep the trials of the world out of our lives. Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” It is my deepest desire that God would go with him through this journey of being my husband, protecting him and giving him courage.
Pray for Him as a Supporter
I pray for him as my supporter. He is the one I go to when I have a problem or need encouragement. He is there for me when I need advice. I pray that God would give him discernment and wisdom so he can lead me to better things. James 1:5 reminds us that God will give wisdom to those who ask and so I ask on behalf of my husband.
Start praying powerful prayers for your husband now, whether you are single or have been married for many years. Don’t wait until you’re dating, engaged, or married. The job of a husband is not easy and he needs you and God more than he may even realize. Ecclesiastes 4:12 tell us that while two are stronger than one, a cord of three cannot be broken. Don’t just let God into your marriage, give your marriage to Him and let Him lead you.
