Whenever I hear the Kenny and Dolly Christmas record playing, that’s whenever I know that Christmas is here. We play it on a record player. My parents might not use that record player at all the rest of the year, but they keep it because it wouldn’t be Christmas without Kenny and Dolly. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’d venture to say that our family is the only one with this tradition. So last Saturday whenever my dad tuned up the record player and drug the Christmas boxes out of the attic, my heart was happy.
This year, we were able to visit my parents and be a part of this tradition, but some years Brian and I aren’t home for the annual decorating of the Christmas tree and that’s why starting our own family traditions is even more important. Now, this is only our 2nd married Christmas so we don’t have everything worked out yet. The best traditions happen by chance. But one tradition that I will carry on for the rest of my life is making Christmas candy. Last year, I shared a few fudge recipes with you. Those recipes are amazingly delicious but they are a little more difficult than the average recipe so today I’m sharing three simple Christmas candy recipes with you.
All of these recipes use Grape Nuts® Cereal. Grape Nuts® Cereal has been around since 1897 so it’s safe to say that this cereal is a bit of a tradition in itself. Christmas is all about indulgence, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy quality foods. So before you start baking, hop on over to coupons.com and print your coupon for Post Cereals. Then, head to Target and pick up your box of Grape Nuts® Cereal.
Now, let’s get down to business. The first recipe that I am going to share with you is a traditional Christmas Haystack Grape Nuts® recipe. Haystacks are usually made with butterscotch and nuts, but this Christmas version uses white chocolate and fun sprinkles. Whenever my husband tried it he said, ‘That was undeniably yummy…now that I’ve tried that I can’t wait to try your other recipe.’ Brian is a huge foodie so if he approves of a recipe then I know that it really is good.
1 Cup Grape Nuts® Cereal
1 Cup Chow Mein Noodles
8 oz. White Chocolate
- Mix Grape Nuts® cereal and chow mein noodles in a bowl.
- Melt your white chocolate.
- Add your white chocolate to your cereal mixture.
- Drop spoonfuls of the mixture onto wax paper.
- Add sprinkles.
- Let the white chocolate harden and enjoy.
This next recipe is my favorite. It combines two of my favorite things: chocolate and peppermint. I have to admit that as soon as I finished photographing this beautiful treat I devoured it and it’s every bit as good as it looks.
Peppermint Hot Chocolate Cereal Bars
1 ½ Cup Grape Nuts® Cereal
2 Cups Marshmallows
1 Tablespoon Butter
¼ Cup Chocolate Chips
¼ Cup Chopped Chocolate Cookies
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Add marshmallows and stir until melted.
- Remove from heat.
- Stir in Grape Nuts® Cereal, Chocolate Chips, and Cookies.
- Drizzle with chocolate syrup and sprinkle with peppermint candy pieces.
- Allow to cool before serving and top with marshmallows.
My final recipe is a healthy one. It still includes a little bit of chocolate, but thanks to Grape Nuts® Cereal it’s good for me too! This one is perfect for long days at work whenever you just need a little snack.
1 Cup Grape Nuts® Cereal
1 Cup Craisins
1 Cup Red and Green Candy Coated Chocolates
1 Cup Nuts
- Mix all ingredients together and enjoy!
